The city, new Jerusalem, represents the people of God. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. ‣ Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. And Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall never again pass through it.
Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth,Is Mount Zion in the far north,The city of the great King. We already know from the scriptures what is going to be described to us. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Paul makes the same connection, describing how husbands love their wives as how Christ loves the church. The angel carries John away in the Spirit to show him the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. Being carried in the Spirit reminds us that John continues a visionary sequence (Revelation 1:10; 4:2).
The apostle Paul described the Jerusalem that is from above as the children of promise, the people of God (Galatians 4:21-31). For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come. The great, high wall represents how the unclean and wicked cannot enter into fellowship with God. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. The walls are like diamonds, clear as glass, while the city was made of pure gold. God, in her palaces,Has made Himself known as a stronghold. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. This is the dwelling place of God. He is seeing a vision from God. The holy people of God are with the Lord in perfect fellowship where there is nothing evil.
The New Testament has taught us the same imagery. Many precious stones from the high priest’s breastplate are identified here, perhaps indicating the whole of Israel, God’s holy people, represented in this city. These vast measurements of the city are to show that the people of God are secure and safe. Verses 12-14 describes the walls and the gates of the city. Z.
