Thanks for this awesome post which affirms I’m not the only one. Reviewers either celebrate or dislike the concept. I feel the same way.
But now, after reading this, I’m comfortable again with the literal meaning of DNF, because I’m not finished, it’s DNF, not WNF, and I will finish. Sure.
I often read out of my genres and finish a book that I don’t love, but if something bores me I just can’t I recently was in a slump for a few months because the ebook I was reading was so dull .
Maybe it’s an injury, maybe a severe gastrointestinal issue. I had learned how the aid stations are laid out, what items are likely to be most helpful to me and when, and how a day is altered when it starts at 2:30 a.m. Now I know where my mind might go if I am not careful. My answer is yes!

I’ve discovered that there are so many reasons why individuals who DNF a book. So I’ll start reading something else to make sure I’m not going through some sort of slump and I almost ALWAYS intend to go back and finish it.
I remember the first time I DNF’d a book and I still feel the itch of guilt. I had not really risked anything. Voluntarily. Don’t Nurture Fear! Sometimes it’s a voluntary, considered and rational decision, when the pain or time or risk of continuing are determined to outweigh the value of a buckle. Am I disappointed at the result?
Books written badly just don’t work well for me. Outward Bound aid station, half way to DNF #2. I’m glad it’s not just me! Authors fear it.
But I totally felt better, knowing that maybe the book wasn’t right for me or maybe just not right at the time.
On Goodreads I’ll not star rate but put it in my “not for me” folder with a reason why. Now I DNF if I don’t like it, unless it’s a uni book in which case I have to push on. Highly positive and highly negative are both two extremes, and you can see from this graph that those aren’t as common. Cougar Mountain Trail Run Series 50k 50 KM. If the story is about glorifying it for some reason, put something in a trigger warning or in the author’s comments as to why.

Having accomplished my goal of getting over the pass before the cutoff, my forward momentum temporarily abandoned me and I proceeded down the mountain at a leisurely trot, feeling proud of myself. Books With Super Long Titles on My TBR.
I Did Not Fail. It’s impossible for us all to like all books, I used to hate DNFing books, but over the last year or so, I’ve learned to loosen up on my expectations of myself. There are some I am open to going back to, but I’m not going to force myself to read them RIGHT AT THIS VERY MOMENT if I don’t feel like I’m enjoying it. I’m so glad I read reviews though, because I think a lot of the time they steer me clear of books that would make me DNF. Despair Negates Freedom! Lesson learned for both readers and authors: Don’t assume a DNF always means something bad about that book.
Definition. But if you ever feel like you’d love to put it down and forget about it but you can’t, you can.
