The Dark Tower saga has been long gestating in Hollywood, bouncing between directors and studios. He plans to rule in the darkness and chaos that follows. BLOODY AMAZING epic tail of traveling jack. As regular readers of the Dark Tower novels know, many of Stephen King’s other works tie in to the Tower – either directly or indirectly. Personally, I’m in the same boat as Geekunchained here – It doesn’t need to be included. Following that, I’d suggest burning right through books two through four without intermission.
This vision is bold and visionary, just like the book series itself. However, I found it very satisfying to discover these tie-ins after the fact, rather than priming myself by reading some of the other works first. But if you must, then these are your options.
Still have a lot of reading to do though! I am planning on using this list as a guideline but suprised that The Talisman is excluded. The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three ( Log Out /
With hearts in Atlantis, am I supposed to read all of the books in the collection? If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. One last thing before I go: happy birthday to Stephen King, who turns 68 today! Let me be clear: I adore Hearts in Atlantis! I struggle to suggest putting any other books between your reading of the Tower novels, and I wouldn’t recommend this as a must-read before embarking on The Dark Tower.
Otherwise, put it immediately before book 5. She put out a plea to Tower Junkies everywhere to guide her in her quest for the Tower. That’s a lot of material to sift through. I’ve recently started listening to the most excellent The Year of Underrated Stephen King Podcast, which I can highly recommend for truly insightful analyses of the lesser known Stephen King works. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey do battle in this epic film based on Stephen King's novel. However, it has a very different feel to The Talisman, and I really didn’t enjoy this one much (other than seeing the Tower connections). A beginner’s read through of the series is probably going to be one of those options, and I’d personally recommend going with all eight books. It's also the one book in the series to end on a major cliffhanger, which made the six-year gap between Books 3 and 4 all the harder to bear. It never really forges a firm connection to the Dark Tower books, but it's still worth reading for two reasons. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands These two novels were written years apart, but they are connected: Black House is a sequel to The Talisman. You’re welcome to enjoy them, of course, but I’d recommend you not read them while in the middle of the series. It’s very long and has a slow build-up that some readers find boring.
That’s 23 books, if you count the two versions of The Stand, The Gunslinger, and The Little Sisters of Eluria (which also appears in the story collection Everything’s Eventual).
Duma Key is one of my absolute favourites of King’s works. The series tells of the fall of Gilead and the Battle of Jericho Hill, and elaborates on a lot of backstory only hinted at in the novels. I like the way this order is laid out, and it’s much less daunting than reading every book he’s ever written in the order they were released. Thanks fella started with the Stand when all this corona bollocks shit hit the fan mid March and I’m up just starting Wizard and Glass, so I’m glad I got your list now as I’ll listen to the companion books before starting Songs, which will be good as the audiobooks change narrator after Wizard and it would piss me off to have a different voice in my head straight away for Roland and the Ka tet.
I’m planning to attack this reading list.
I’m currently on my sixth trip through the books, and this is the first time I’ve read Wind between books 4 and 5, and I admit it fits there exceptionally well. As I said, you may want to move Insomnia up before The Gunslinger, keeping it as pre-reading along with The Stand and ‘Salem’s Lot. It also gives a back ground on crossing over into other worlds which would give some more foundation before reading the Drawing of Three. Okay, that’s completely fair enough and all opinions are valid when it comes to The Tower So let’s see what you’re getting yourself into. Talisman is the first of the pair and makes Black House much fuller as otherwise it can be quite disjointed. But there are parts that really shine, and I think it’s vital to the narrative as a whole. Finally, I think a truly rewarding experience would be to reread The Gunslinger once more after finishing The Dark Tower. I know it’s long, I know it’s boring, and I know a lot of it makes no sense, but it has major connections to The Dark Tower. I didn’t read them in that order, so when Ted popped up in DT it’s like’hmm I’ve come across him before’.
