The locations are about 20 miles apart. Reading through news articles, I am seeing conflicting reports of repair vs replace. It's worth bearing in mind as well that Chocktaw Ridge, which features prominently in the song, is located a hundred miles away on the east side of the I-55, and not anywhere near the Tallahatchie River as it passes through Leflore County. That is where the original Tallahatchie Bridge was from the story of Billy Joe. All of these news reports use the name Tallahatchie instead of Little Tallahatchie. Charleston was the first county seat.
its was torn down in 1987. but the real bridge that billy joe jumped off of was about 2 miles west of Holcomb ms and until 2 years ago had a span left in the woods near the Yalobusha river . In 1972 the U.S. Board on Geographic Names decided that this is the Little Tallahatchie River. The bridge was demolished in 1987, and there is a plaque on the new UCEB stating that the bridge is the replcaement for the "Ode To Billie Joe" bridge. One family was evacuated from a nearby house and the windows were boarded up as a precaution against blast damage.
Later topo maps and Google both misspell it as Worrell, when city documents/locals/older topos all use Worle. FWIW s topo map from 1965 also call this the Little Tallahatchie River, though those also spell streams wrong from time to time. So the old bridge near Money, which was torn down many years ago and replaced, was almost certainly not THE bridge that she wrote about, if indeed she had any specific bridge in mind.
I would love to find out.
That bridge, as documented on the roadside marker was actually over the Yazoo River on the other side of town and was a truss style bridge that the movie people thought looked more authentic. That bridge, as documented on the roadside marker was actually over the Yazoo … This is. This is the only place I have been able to find the location of the Tallahatchie Bridge. This is NOT the bridge referred to in the song. In 2016, this sign was vandalized by multiple gunshots. All of that said, this bridge is on the edge of a beautiful old school residential neighborhood in an upscale area of town. Let the world see your experience through your eyes. I'd like to know the story behind the naming of the nearby Dummyline Road! That bridge on Roebuck Rd. I don't know if it will be retained or demolished. Thought to be location of famous Tallahatchie Bridge, Greenwood, Mississippi, USA. A matter of some discussion, as are a number of points in "Ode to Billie Joe". I should mention that Google Maps seems to have erroneously labeled this river as the Little Tallahatchie. Read all three of my posts. Sorry,David is correct....It is(OR WAS)located in Leflore County...My mistake.Travis Nokes. That is where the original Tallahatchie Bridge was from the story of Billy Joe. I grew up in Sidon. Bridgehunter has a special field for alternate name, and I think that we should use that special field for its intended purpose. As on all of the back roads down here, puffs of cotton are all over the shoulders and cotton fields are aplenty with the large rolls (modules) of harvested cotton sitting here and there, replacing old fashioned bales. The one that appeared in the movie is SOUTH of Greenwood.
