Unlike deer, which have branched antlers shed annually, bongos and other antelopes have pointed horns they keep throughout their lives. Few estimates of population density are available. "The Bongo" redirects here. However, these taboos are said no longer to exist, which may account for increased hunting by humans in recent times.
Although mostly nocturnal, they are occasionally active during the day. Because of its bright colour, it is very popular in zoos and private collections. We’re here to support you along the way….
It has an auburn or chestnut coat with 10 to 15 vertical whitish-yellow stripes running down its sides.
In 2000, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the USA (AZA) upgraded the bongo to a Species Survival Plan participant and in 2006 added the Bongo Restoration to Mount Kenya Project to its list of the Top Ten Wildlife Conservation Success Stories of the year. By managing the European and African populations as one – by strategic exports from Europe combined with in situ transfers, gene loss is reduced to 0.72% every 100 years, with both populations remaining stable.
Along with many other species in the region, the mountain bongo is hunted as "bush meat" to feed a growing human population. Like many forest ungulates, bongos are herbivorous browsers and feed on leaves, bushes, vines, bark and pith of rotting trees, grasses/herbs, roots, cereals, and fruits. HISTORY: The Bongo Surveillance Project (BSP) is a home grown Kenyan organisation, founded by Mike Prettejohn in 2004. The entire Mountain Bongo population in zoos all over the world, totaling over 500 animals is derived from wild Bongo, captured in the Aberdares in the 1970’s. Though short in stature (122–128 cm [48–50 inches] shoulder height), males weigh on average 300 kg (660 pounds) and up to 400 kg (880 pounds); females weigh about 240 kg (530 pounds).
The stripes range between 10 to 15 and interestingly each side usually has a … However, such fights are usually discouraged by visual displays, in which the males bulge their necks, roll their eyes, and hold their horns in a vertical position while slowly pacing back and forth in front of the other male.
The preferred habitat of this species is so dense and difficult to operate in, that few Europeans or Americans observed this species until the 1960s. [4] Bongo populations have been greatly reduced by hunting, poaching, and animal trapping, although some bongo refuges exist. They have a flexible social structure and appear to have no lasting bonds.
Although information on their status in the wild is lacking, lowland bongos are not presently considered endangered.
The 19 Wildlife Clubs are a vital part of the Bongo Surveillance initiative and conservation programme. The first record of a bongo in captivity occurred in 1932 when a female (“Doreen”) was brought to the Bronx Zoo in New York; she lived there until 1951. Coats of male bongos become darker as they age until they reach a dark mahogany-brown colour. Found only in Kenya, the Mountain Bongo is critically endangered. Two widely separated bongo subspecies exist in increasingly fragmented populations.

Until the end of January 2019, all funds raised will go to supporting the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in the heart of the Way Kambas National Park on the island of Sumatra which is successfully breeding this incredibly amazing animals.
Today, all three populations' ranges have shrunk in size due to habitat loss for agriculture and uncontrolled timber cutting, as well as hunting for meat.
