It's too bad Smith's trademark humor got in the way, because while the film definitely has its flaws, there's no denying that it also had the ability to serve as an intelligent debate about religion. That's the main problem with Dogma--it's an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith's writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he's not topnotch should take a look at Chasing Amy), his direction hasn't. Dogma is Kevin Smith's most ambition film yet, and despite the rough edges he succeeds at delivering an incredibly funny adventure.
