This included the deadly EF3 tornado that struck the town of Glade Spring, Virginia, very early in the morning, where three people died. The event not only affected Alabama and Mississippi the most severely, but also produced destructive tornadoes in Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, and affected many other areas throughout the Southern and Eastern United States. 48 tornadoes have been reported to the Storm Prediction Center. The tornado also crossed Interstate Highway 20 tossing numerous cars and forcing the interstate to be closed for hours. By April 30, the death toll from the event (including death tolls from flooding and other severe weather) stood at more than 340 people across six states. Another EF2 tornado 5 miles south of Thomasville, North Carolina produced 2 deaths, and caused severe damage in the Noahtown Road community with houses destroyed and people trapped. None of those tornadoes resulted in any fatalities. Devastating tornadoes hit southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri on this Sunday afternoon. The tornado crossed the road and became large and wedge-shaped, reaching EF4 intensity, scouring the ground to bare soil, debarking trees, and leveling homes, one of which was reduced to a bare slab (though this home was nailed rather than bolted to its foundation). Numerous well-built homes were leveled in that area, and some were swept completely away. It not uncommon for a morning cluster of severe t-storms to be followed by a more dangerous round of afternoon supercells. Seven fatalities occurred at this location. In all, a total of 867 residences and 94 businesses within the city of Cullman were damaged or destroyed. A heavy propane tank was lofted and thrown 100 yards from one of the chicken houses, and 19 cattle on the property were killed. A single supercell became tornadic over extreme western Iowa, producing a family of ten tornadoes over the course of five hours. Hail up to 5 cm (2.0 in) in diameter fell in some places, damaging farmland and greenhouses. This tornado came from the same supercell that produced the EF4 that hit the town of Ringgold, Georgia, about 30 minutes later. As the storm crossed into Madison County, it approached the densely populated suburban communities of Harvest and Toney, where it either damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes, especially in the Anderson Hills and Carter's Gin subdivisions. Overall, the tornado outbreak resulted in 184 deaths, 6 of those non-tornadic, making it second only to the 2011 Super Outbreak as the deadliest since 1974, and the second costliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history behind that same April 2011 outbreak, with insured damage estimated at $4–7 billion.[4].
